There is a famous quote by Gautam Buddha

"The mind is everything. What you think you become".

According to world-renowned Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck, there are two types of people. One is a fixed mindset and the other is a growth mindset.

Let me ask you a question. Do you know the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset? Let's talk about the basic difference.

  1. Fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence and talent are by born that can't be improved by hard work and patience. A fixed mindset focuses highly on the result rather than action or effort.

Example: I can't learn Python as I'm from Business background

Features of fixed mindset people

●      Don't want to take the challenge

●      Always think feedback is critical

●      expect results without hard work

●      Simply give up on anything

●      Cannot accept failure

●      Blame the situation for the failure

●     Less interested in learning

In a nutshell, a fixed mindset is to believe that skills and talent can't be improved.

  1. Growth Mindset is the belief that intelligence and talent aren’t by born that can be improved by hard work and patience. Growth mindset people focus highly on effort or action rather than the result.

Example: Although I'm from a business background I can learn python because I have a strong commitment and desire for it.

Features of Growth mindset people

People with the Growth Mindset have certain characteristics that make them easy to distinguish from people with a fixed mindset.  Let's get to know those features.

●     Always accept challenges

●     Take feedback for every task

●     Expect appropriate results through hard work

●     Do not give up easily.

●     Accept failure and learn.

●     always learn something new

In a nutshell, a Growth mindset is to believe that skills and talent can be improved.

Besides these two types of mindset, there is another mindset known as a mixed mindset. It is the combination of both fixed and growth mindset.

How can you figure out your mindset? To know about your mindset, you've to ask the following question from yourself. The answer will be yes or no.

●     You can't change your level of intelligence and talent

●     You can't change your skills

●     You can learn anything with desire, patience, and hard work

●     You can control yourself to learn new skills.

Don't forget to be honest and think about your present thinking styles while answering the questions.

If your answer to the first two questions is "No" and the last two questions are "Yes" you have a growth mindset otherwise fixed mindset.

The privilege of growth mindset: Growth mindset has both personal and professional privilege.

  1. Personal privilege: helps to know thyself (values, beliefs), provides a direction to purpose, improves the relationship, helps to get out of comfort zone, focus on effort rather than the result, how to overcome failure.
  2. Professional privilege:  diverse knowledge, continuous learning, successful career, purpose about career, update skills.

Now, how can you build a growth mindset? The answer is you can practice following hacks and steps.

Hacks to develop a growth mindset

1. Don’t focus on result focus on work

2. Do instantly

3. Start small

4. Accept challenge

5. Set a SMART goal

6. Avoid multitasking

Three steps to develop a growth mindset

  1. Know your talent level for your desire.

Example: Karim wants to be a good content writer. What types of talent he has (average, below average, above average) to develop this skill.

  1. Know your commitment toward continuous improvement

Example: Karim's commitment to learning about content writing (High, low, medium).

  1. Your focus on talent and continuous improvement

Hacks of continuous improvement

●     Build a regular learning habit

●     Learn new things every day

●     Follow contingency plan

Example: Karim needs to develop caption writing skills to develop content.

●     Monitor what new things you learned in a week.

●      Implement/ practice your learning

How to overcome failure and Challenges?

●     Be prepared to accept failure

●     Think failure as feedback

●     Celebrate both success and failure

●     Develop continuously

●     Create a review process.

How can you develop your potentials?

Potentials are something by developing which you can go ahead in the future. Remember one thing developing potential is a journey, not a destination. So, you've to nurture your potentials regularly in order to get a better outcome. Another thing is why you want to develop your potential is more important than what potential you want to develop.

Hacks to develop your potentials

  1. Get out of your comfort zone
  2. Develop Flow (staying in the zone). Flow helps people to enjoy their work.
  3. Develop creative skills

Creating your own opportunities: is the process of converting challenges as an opportunity.

For Example, you can waste your quarantine time by watching TV or utilize by developing your soft skills.

Hacks to create opportunities

  1. Know your vision: vision is a broad picture that you want to achieve in the long term. Example: where you want to see yourself after five years. Vision will guide you.
  2.   Mission statement: describes how vision is related to your values. This will give you optimism.
  3. SMART Goal: SMART=Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound)

Example: I've to post at least two articles on BizHorizon Magazine every month.

  1. Action plan: which skills, competency, and knowledge you required to achieve your vision.
  2. The review process is how you will measure your success.

Four key factors of flexible thinking

  1. Accept the result & Don't blame
  2. Be flexible in the action plan
  3. Change your attitude
  4. The balance between your desire and action.

Let's practice this learning from today.

Because Jim Rohn said that if you want to do something you'll find a way. If you don't you will find an excuse.
